Biennial MArteLive

The MArteLive Biennial is a massive wave of events and culture that hits Italy every two years in December with its epicentre in Rome.

For each edition, about 1,000 Italian and international artists perform for a total of over 300 shows in about 70 locations scattered throughout the Lazio region.

The beating heart of the event is the MArteLive Total Show in its historical format which, since 2011, along with the Biennial, has witnessed an amazing evolution on a regional scale.

The phases of the competition

The MArteLive Contest is open to artists between 18 to 35, European residents or citizens. It follows a 4-step process of selection, running both online and live.

STEP 1 - CALL FOR ARTISTS

Submit your best work or performance.

STEP 2 - ONLINE AND LIVE STREAM AUDITIONS

MArtelive selects the 10 best artists for each Artistic Discipline that will perform online in livestream audition events. Artists are evaluated by both qualified juries and the audience.

STEP 3 - SEMI-FINAL SHOWS

Spectacular live events where the 3 best artists, for each of the 16 Artistic Disciplines, perform all together: a unique experience for both the artists and the audience. Semifinal Shows will be in Vilnius (Lithuania), Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Krakow (Poland). The winners get a cash prize and fly to Rome for the European Final Show.

STEP 4 - EUROPEAN FINAL SHOW (October 2021)

An unforgettable show, where the best of European talents perform together to really wow the audience. The show is held during the prestigious MArteLive Biennial, a high-impact event spread through 60 locations in Rome, with an audience of 50,000 people.

and also...

Art Residencies

MArtelive is much more than a contest. Semifinal winners and other selected artists can take part in 1-week Art Residencies in Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The artists live together and create unique multidisciplinary performances, that will be showcased in special events in the Art Residency location and on the MArteLive Biennial Festival in Rome, Italy.

Best moments of the experience and “making of” will be shared on MArteLive social media and website, giving the artists a platform to directly connect with the audience.

20 years: forever young

This first European edition of the MArtelive contest takes place after 20 years of experience in Italy, where MArtelive has already helped thousands of youngsters express their artistic views and gain international exposure.

Thanks to this background, MArteLive proves that creativity has no limits: the energy of the festival vibrates across styles and ways of expression, creating a unique space for connections.

Testimonials

What do the artists think?

"In the past I had already had experience of participating in various exhibitions and competitions. However, despite my ever-growing desire to join the Italian art scene, many of them were outside Italy.
Consequently, as soon as I heard about MArteLive, I seized this long-awaited opportunity and applied for the Biennale in Rome.
It was an important and exciting adventure in my artistic journey.
If you are an emerging artist there can be no better way to build a network of like-minded contacts by engaging in all kinds of cultural events.
So my advice is to be brave and confident and never get discouraged."

Alexandra Slava SevostianovaAlexandra Slava SevostianovaWinner MArteLive Sculpture 2017

What do the institutions think?

"MArtelive is an important initiative that MiBACT has rightly decided to promote because it multiplies places of culture and entertainment, mixing centre and periphery, genres and forms of expression that now, thanks to the new law on live entertainment, the Republic is called upon to support".

Dario FranceschiniDario FranceschiniMinister for Cultural Activities and Heritage in Italy

"MArteLive drags, overflows, invades different spaces and places and therefore reaches different audiences, like a cultural fertiliser on Lazio. There is energy, desire, creativity. Their initiatives reduce the gap between Rome and the rest of Lazio, which is exactly one of the main objectives of our policies. It's money well spent, therefore."

Lidia RaveraLidia RaveraWriter and ex Assessore alle Politiche Culturali della Regione Lazio - Italy

"MArteLive is a shared and participatory process. And it must be seen as a seed that grows, that does not end on 28 September. From the point of view of the development of the suburbs, this is certainly one more weapon to defeat degradation."

Paolo MasiniPaolo MasiniPaolo Masini, ex Councillor for the Development of the Peripheries of Roma Capitale

What does the public think?

Total, involving and exciting performance. A brilliant and unique idea, capable of embracing and enhancing different artistic expressions. Besides, those who know him know that Peppe Casa is a living idea!
